EHR Catastrophe Avoidance Series - Part 9 - The Test Drive

Take it for a spin! You wouldn’t purchase a fine automobile without taking it for a test drive, would you? For the most part, vendors usually insist on giving you an on-site demo. They will walk you through a “generic” patient visit while they control the outcome. As they leave your office, with their software in hand, listen closely for the muffled snicker. They know you will need extensive billable training and setup time since you haven’t had a chance to acquaint yourself properly with the program.

On the other hand…”Here are the keys, the tank is filled with gas, enjoy the ride…we’ll be your On-Star support should you have any questions!”   Believe it or not, there really ARE such programs (and helpful vendors) that you and your staff members can download to your computers (the programs…not the vendors).  Hammer the heck out of these programs to ensure they will meet your needs.  No, you probably can’t prescribe drugs or tap into your local laboratory to check results on a patient, but at least you’ll get the feel of how this baby handles.  This is also a great way to see how quickly you can get in touch with technical support.  But go easy on them… they’re the folks you may need to rely on once in a while for REAL support.

“What does this button do?   Oops!”  Are there any user manuals available?  Training videos?  Most companies keep those things under lock and key until the sale is final.  If your vendor is willing to loan those items to you, this may be the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Synergy is the key… In order for any plan to work properly, your entire team needs to be on board.  Finding out now who likes this and who hates that, will drastically reduce the amount of time it takes to develop a fully functioning office.  Just one resistant member on the team is all it takes to slow things down.  My suggestion is to give your office a week to play with the program at their own pace and then have a pow wow to voice opinions.  Whatever flaws you may find, may simply be a matter that proper training can remedy.  You are boarding a powerful vehicle to propel your office in a new direction.  My hope is that it will be the best ride your practice has ever taken.  Let’s talk!
